Die Angriffswaffen aus Olympia
Series:Olympische Forschungen 29
Aims and Scope
No other archaeological site in Greece has produced more weapons and pieces of armour than the Sacred Grove of Zeus in Olympia. From the 8th to the 5th century BC Greek poleis traditionally dedicated to the Olympic Zeus some of the weapons captured in victorious battles.
The present volume undertakes a scrupulous analysis of the offensive weapons, namely arrowheads, missiles, spear heads, spear shafts and swords. The extensive finds are categorised by type and their chronology and distribution are discussed together with their significance for the Sanctuary at Olympia.
The detailed analysis of the finds in Olympia and of comparable finds from the Aegean make this study an authoritative reference work for Greek offensive weapons and provides new insights into warfare in the Archaic and Early Classical periods.
