Aims and Scope
In keeping with an acknowledged tradition As part of the 125 years tradition of literature and science related Kürschner publications, a compendium is now being published, presenting information about living persons as well as institutions of visual arts in a compact, contemporary, and objective manner. Comprehensive and current: An overview of the art scene in Germany, Austria and Switzerland The manual lists over 6,700 living visual artists who are influential in Germany, Austria and Switzerland or are connected to these countries through their origins. No less than 1,600 artists have been added to the list since the first edition. Besides painting, graphics, sculpture, book art, action and media art, a selection of architecture, photography and craftwork is also represented. The work thus provides a current overview of contemporary art in these countries. The articles are predominantly based upon information provided by the artists themselves, thereby guaranteeing a high degree of up-to-dateness and reliability. Rich in facts and very useful: Things worth knowing about people ... The lexically structured articles on artists contain the following information: name, other name forms (including pseudonyms); profession; biographical dates; addresses (including e-mail and URL); membership in associations, communities and groups of artists; galleries representing the artist; information about artistic education and teaching activities; areas of work, genres and techniques used; commercial courses offered; prizes and awards; the locations of art works; exhibitions, bibliography. • 6,100 entries on galleries representing the artist • 17,000 references to the locations of art works in museums and public collections • 46,000 individual exhibitions • 34,000 exhibition; attendances • 6,800 references to membership in associations, artist groups and artist communities • 3,800 artist homepages • 4,100 E-Mail Adresses … and institutions in the world of art: • 2,800 galleries • 1,300 museums and public collections (with artists whose works are among the holdings) • 650 associations and societies • 300 art schools • 90 art journals Kürschners Handbuch der Bildenden Künstler 2007 closes a gap in the current documentation of art. It is therefore an indispensable work for professionals in the art business, for scholars and for all friends of art. Structures and relations within the art business become apparent through the variety of links. Kürschners Handbuch der Bildenden Künstler therefore provides incomparable insight into the world of producing art as well as presenting, trading and collecting it.
