    Aims and Scope

The 2nd, revised and enlarged edition represents a complete reissue of the Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie [Dictionary of German Biography], containing the articles of the first edition, the supplements from volumes 11 and 13 as well as approx. 7,500 new articles. Covering people from all walks of public life, it provides details on some 63,000 individuals whose lives, work, achievements or atrocities rendered them remarkable to this very day and let them become part of the cultural memory of Germany. While not attempting to include each and every biographical facet, the articles provide more than just bare biographical facts, thus exemplifying each individual's specific qualities. As a rule, a reference to further reading is provided at the end of each entry.

1,300 longer articles, written and signed by recognized experts, represent biographical appreciations and contain references to further literature.

Reaching back as far as the Early Middle Ages, the encyclopaedia also records Austrians, German-speaking Swiss as well as any foreigners whose careers took them to German countries or whose achievements impacted German culture.

All articles have been thoroughly revised and updated for the new edition. Details on individuals and references to further reading represent the current state of biographical research. Connections and relations between individuals, families and social groups as well as tradi-tions and schools of thought are exemplified by the improved system of cross-references among articles.
