Aims and Scope
In the interaction between original and copy, this book is concerned with the copy – from the medieval handwritten copy through to authorized copies of cult images, from the practice of copying princely collections through to reprography – highlighting the multi-faceted, articulated focus of copies on their original and the specific aesthetic and medial characteristics.
Beyond the usual innovation imperatives, the contributions investigate artistic repetition and its inherent qualities, directing the reader to its specific form, intention, and content. In this context, the faithfulness of the copy proves to be a characteristic of production – even when, or perhaps because, the faithful copy in essence does not want "to create anything new".
