Physica

Liber subtilitatum diversarum naturarum creaturarum

Edited by: Reiner Hildebrandt and Thomas Gloning
New manuscript discoveries have provided a greatly enhanced basis for this work of Hildegard von Bingen's on natural history and healing, which now contains twice the amount of text as the previous standard edition from 1855. The worlds of animals and plants, together with precious stones, metals and earths, are treated in their entirety from a specific medieval perspective, with a focus on the healing properties of the individual objects from the natural world. In addition, the numerous German words sprinkled throughout the Latin text provide new impulses for research into the history of the German language. Key features: First complete critical edition of the famous "Physica" Based on the newly discovered, unabridged Florentine manuscript Of great interest to medievalists, germanists, medieval latinists, naturalists and medical historians New standard text edition

Reviews

The textual authority of the versions of Hildegard’s medical and pharmaceutical writings that we have known hitherto has been seriously relativized in the course of the last twenty-five years, a process that finds its culmination in this new edition of the Physica."Nigel F. Palmer in: Medium Aevum Vol. LXXX, 2011 "With the critical edition of the Physica by Hildebrandt and Gloning, Hildegard scholarship has taken a big leap forward. There is no doubt that the two volumes are the result of many years of painstaking work in deciphering, comparing, and collating the often vastly divergent versions of the text."Melitta Adamson in: The Medieval Review (11.06.12) "Insgesamt stellt die neue Edition eine wohldurchdachte und klar präsentierte Rekonstruktion des Hildegard-Textes dar; das Original bleibt aufgrund der Überlieferungssituation unerreichbar.
