Frame Images: Configurations of Veneration in Early Modern Italy

Konfigurationen der Verehrung im frühneuzeitlichen Italien

This study focusses on the development, design, and function of altarpieces that feature embedded sacred images in 15th to 17th century Italy. Particularly in the case of older Marian images, artists designed their own altarpieces as a framework and to draw the spectator’s visual and emotional attention. The author systematically addresses this genre of “frame pictures.” A catalogue section reveals their iconographic and stylistic continuity.
