About the Journal
Established in 1980, the Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie – The German Journal of Law and Society offers a forum for the academic analysis of law in its societal context and on the relationship between law and society. The notion of ‘society’ is interpreted broadly. The journal publishes contributions from all disciplines as long as the relationship between law and society can be identified as a core theme. Papers with a theoretical focus and empirically-based analyses are equally welcome. We also publish essays that do not follow the typical format of a journal article as long as the arguments and reasoning are of an academic standard. The journal also features a book review section which discusses recent sociology of law texts published in Germany and other countries. Submissions may be written in German or English.
Only original contributions will be published. However, contributions to the journal may be republished elsewhere provided that the place of first publication is cited.
An overview over the development of the journal can be found in: Cottier Michelle, Die Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie: seit bald 40 Jahren Kristallisationspunkt und Kommunikationsarena der deutschsprachigen Rechtssoziologie, in: Christian Boulanger (Hrsg.) "Rechtssoziologisch publizieren" – Dokumentation eines Rundtischgespräches, 26.03.2019, https://barblog.hypotheses.org/cottier-zeitschrift-fuer-rechtssoziologie.
Peer review
Contributions will be subject to a double blind peer review process, where necessary more than once, involving at least two external referees before the editors take a decision on publication.
Publication frequency
The journal is published twice a year and is included in the abstracting services of Sociological Abstracts and SOLIS – Sozialwissenschaftliches Literaturinformationssystem (a German social science database).
Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie is covered by the following services:
Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts in English or German will be welcomed. Both American English and British English are acceptable, but please ensure that your usage is consistent throughout the text. Articles should not generally exceed 20 printed pages. A printed page corresponds to 3,200 characters including spaces. This means, as a rough guideline, that papers should not exceed 9,000 words (including references, footnotes and annex).
Please submit your manuscript by e-mail to the editor-in-chief. Please also provide an anonymised version of the text which does not identify the author in any way. Submissions should be produced in or converted to MS Word format.
Address of the editor-in-chief:
Dr. Walter Fuchs, IRKS Institut für Rechts- und Kriminalsoziologie, Wien, Austria
walter.fuchs@irks.at
The editors will make every effort to provide a decision on submissions as quickly as possible. However, because of the peer review process, it can take up to 10 weeks before an initial response can be given.
Book reviews
Please send books for review to the book review editor. This is currently Dr. Christian Boulanger, Recht im Kontext, Juristische Fakultät, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Zimmerstraße 23, 10969 Berlin, Germany. E-Mail: christian.boulanger@rewi.hu-berlin.de

Article structureLayout
Where there are three or more authors, only the first-named author should be mentioned in the text, followed by the phrase ‘et al.’. The reference list must include the names of all the authors.
Where the article cites several works by the same author from the same year, these must be distinguished using the letters ‘a’, ‘b’, etc. placed following the year of publication.
The references cited in the text must be arranged in a list to follow the main text (as set out below). Where appropriate, this should be followed by a list of judgments cited.
